David on TV3’s Saturday:am on 15th April talking Malbecs for World Malbec Day this Sunday

On Saturday 16th April, David appeared on the Saturday:am Show on TV3 to explore Malbec Wines.

To celebrate World Malbec Day this Sunday he threw the spotlight on this grape variety to explore why Argentinian Malbec has become a much loved and sought grape variety in Ireland. However to make sure that the white wine drinkers were not left in the lurch he broadened the net a little bit by adding in one Chardonnay.

Like many of the top Argentinian wineries there is a French connection and this wine is no exception. Fresh, juicy red fruits with hints of oak. This wine should prove to be very moreish.

Vallobera Rioja Blanco 2014 €10.95
The San Pedro were growers, now they have turned to winemaking. This delightful white made 100% from the Viura grape has very attractive floral notes and flavours. Unoaked, lively, this has so much more personality than many of the Pinot Grigios around town.

Whelehans Wines. November 2015

Sin Palabras Albariño 2014 €19.95
Albariño is the Spanish grape variety that the Spanish and sommeliers get very excited about. Classically unoaked, it is a zesty vibrant white with apricot and peach aromas and flavours. Some tasters suggest this grape variety is like a cross between a Riesling and a Sauvignon Blanc.

La Vieja Bodega Garnacha Gran Reserva 2005 €10.95
It is always interesting to try a wine with a bit of bottle age. This has delicious fruit cake aromas and flavours. Spice with ripe forest fruit aromas underpinned by a smooth and toasty oakiness. The French use the term sous bois for the developed character that this wine shows.

Finca Resalso 2014

Emilio Moro Finca Resalso 2014 €16.95
Rioja as a region is very famous however it’s neighbouring DO of Ribera del Duero can produce some sensational wines and of course the famous Vega Sicilia comes from this DO. Emilio Moro is considered one of the very important producers. This wine is a delicious expression of lightly oaked Tempranillo. Dark in colour, juicy and vibrant.
