Wines for brunch ~ Saturday AM, TV 3, 17th September 2016

On Saturday 17th September, David appeared on the Saturday:am Show on TV3 to match some delicious wines to the chef’s foray into brunch, with Ham Hock and Eggs Benedict. What better way to start your day with some fizz and bubbles.  Firstly a sublime and very highly awarded sparkling wine, followed by two different takes on much loved cocktails.

Below are the wines which featured on the show, which you can see David talking about here. All are available from Whelehans Wines store in Loughlinstown and also on our website www.whelehanswines.ie.

BOUVET CRÉMANT DE LOIRE TRESOR BRUT 2010    €27.95

The origins of Bouvet-Ladubay lie in the “Tuffeau” stone of its cellars. The legend says that Etienne Bouvet found the treasure of the Monks of the 11th Century Abbey of St Florent. In 1987, Patrice Monmousseau uncovers his treasure by creating “Trésor” , the first Cuvée of the house aged in oak barrels. This opulent Chenin Blanc & delightful Chardonnay Cuvée aged in oak barrels reveals a delicate structure : Brioche & Citrusy aromas, a creamy texture & well-balanced tannins.

This is a rich, complex option for those who adore Champagne but don’t want to fork out the mandatory premium that Champagne commands.

Alc. 12.5%

BOUVET BRUT BLANC 1851    €22.95 €19.95

A gorgeous, soft colour. It exudes wonderful aromas of flowers, a little honey, honeysuckle, melon and acacia.  We’re going to use this to create a couple of classic cocktails that are simply fantastic with brunch.

Alc. 12.5%

MIMOSA

This is a classic American cocktail that combines equal parts dry sparkling wine and fresh orange juice.  To this end we choose Bouvet 1851 a wonderful Chenin based sparkling wine and add equal parts of freshly squeezed orange juice. We will make this and try it with the food.

BUCKS FIZZ

A highly regarded British cocktail same ingredients as a Mimosa simply different proportions. This time the ratio is 2/3 sparkling wine, 1/3 freshly squeezed orange juice.
