David celebrates Women Winemakers ~ Saturday AM, TV 3, 27th August 2016

On Saturday 27th August, David featured on the Saturday:am Show on TV3 to talk about four outstanding wines. National Heritage Week was in full swing and this year’s has a particular emphasis on Women’s Heritage. These four highly rated and well-reviewed wines are all creations by female winemakers.

White

Cuvée Caroline 2015      €14.95

Picpoul-Cuvee-Caroline-2014Winemaker: Caroline Morin

Picpoul de Pinet is a very trendy appellation in the Languedoc. The Piquepoul grape yields a crisp, zesty white with layers of white fruit aromas and flavours. There is no oak used in this blend. This wine is particularly good with shellfish so anyone heading to the Dalkey Lobster festival should look out for this wine style.

Yalumba Organic Viognier 2014      €17.95

Yalumba is a large but highly regarded family winemaker. They have a particular association with the Viognier grape which by it’s nature is rich and unctuous. This wine is pale straw with green hues, with aromas of fennel and apricot nectar with jasmine. Theses are joined by white flowers and star fruit leading to a creamy, rich and long mid-palate with Asian five spice on the finish.

Barco del Corneta 2013      €28.95

Winemaker: Beatriz Herranz

Verdejo is a white wine grape that many Irish who visit Spain absolutely adore. Stylistically it is similar to Sauvignon. Handcrafted, Barco del Corneta ventures to maintain the essence of Verdejo, respecting the identity of the variety of the land and the climate. The vines are up to 150 years old. Barrel fermented with indigenous yeasts, this is a very intense, complex expression of this varietal. Parker rated 92 points.

Red

La Ronciere Pinot Noir 2014      €14.95

Winemaker: Arielle Vatan

This is a delicious well-crafted Pinot Noir made from vines near Sancerre in the Loire. Lively, with very attractive red fruit aromas and flavours this wines is one of the best value expressions of this grape varietal in the world.

Medal Winning Wines ~ Saturday AM, TV 3, 13th August 2016

On Saturday 13th August, David appeared on the Saturday:am Show on TV3 to talk about medal winning wines with the Olympics in full swing.  These are deserved medal winners in every sense – true champions worthy of their place on the podium.

Whites

Domaine LeBrun Pouilly-Fumé 2015     €19.95

Copy of DLB0404Pouilly Fumé is one of the world’s favourite white wines. It typically has lots of fruit and flinty aromas and flavours and typifies the complexity that good Sauvignon Blanc can achieve.

Domaine LeBrun is a very small specialist producer and year in year out attracts lots of favourable awards. This vintage took Gold at the Salons de Loire 2016 – no surprise, simply sensational!

Talinay Chardonnay 2014   €19.95

Intense, complex, barrique aged Chardonnay from arguably Chile’s greatest producer, Tabalí. This single Vineyard Chardonnay is incredibly intense and complex and worthy of all the awards that it wins.

Reds

Chaminé 2014    €14.95

IMG_2056Portuguese wines are definitely gaining a following in Ireland. Coming from a multiple medal and award winning winery in Alentejano, this Tempranillo, Syrah blend is simple, juicy and quite delicious.

Gold Medal Concours de Bruxelles 2015

Château Janoy-Bellevue 2014   €14.95

A complex, intriguing offering from Entre-deux-Mers. Made predominantly from Merlot it is rich and polished on the palate with some chunky tannins.

Definitely demands to be served with food. Wine of the Week in the Irish Times. Gold Medal winner at the Concours International 2015, Gilbert & Gaillard.

David on Wedding Season Wines ~ Saturday AM, TV3, 30th July 2016

On Saturday 30th July, David appeared on the Saturday:am Show on TV3 to talk about wines for weddings.

With wedding season in full swing, David threw the spotlight on wines for the big day. On the show, they sampled some of the classics and chatted about the wine styles that have universal appeal without blowing the budget whilst charming the most discerning of wine drinkers.

David also gave advice on corkage rates and sale or return options for couples buying their own wine for their special day.

The Fizz

Bouvet Crémant de Loire Rosé Brut NV   €23.95

For those who have thought about Pink Champagne fleetingly, this is will prove to be an exceptional alternative. Coming from the famous House of Bouvet that has been owned in its past by Champagne House Taittinger.

Made from the Cabernet Franc grape, the wine has a delicate pale pink colour. Tiny bubbles, an elegant bouquet with raspberry and vine peach notes. On the palate, this wine is well balanced, fresh with a pleasing mousse.

The Whites

Mâcon-Milly-LaMartine 2015   €14.95

This is a real all-rounder – versatile to the core. Classic white Burgundy, we should add Chardonnay.

Rich and polished on the palate with fresh grapefruit and white flower fragrance. It has a lively in-mouth aerial structure; a very convivial, finally fruity and delicately tangy wine.

Haut-Poitou Sauvignon Blanc 2015   €11.95

Archetypal Sauvignon Blanc coming from the spiritual home of this grape variety, the Loire Valley. This is a very intense, aromatic Sauvignon from a great vintage.

It screams citrus and green fruits aromas and flavours. More akin to a premium Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It was commended at the International Wine Challenge 2016.

The Reds

Pegos Claros 2012  €14.95

A Portuguese crowd pleaser. Made from the native Castelāo grape, the grapes are foot tread and the wine after vinification is matured in oak for one year.

A rich red that has Bordeaux references stamped all over it. Awarded gold at the Vinalies Internationales 2016.

Catena Malbec 2014   €19.95

Argentinian Malbec appears to have captured the attention of so many wine enthusiasts. Renowned for its smooth round palate with attractive red fruits. This Malbec is widely available and well regarded.

The House of Catena has been one of the pioneering names on the Argentinian wine circuit over the last 100 years. This is a very well-judged offering.
